While Bould is new to the role, he admits he hasn’t really spoken to Rice about the job saying he wants to fulfil the role of Assistant Manager in his own unique way.
The internal promotion of Bould and also Neil Banfield, who was promoted to First-team coach from Reserves coach, has been praised by both men with Bould saying their promotion is an indication that the philosophy of Arsenal flows throughout the entire youth set-up.
Bould is quoted by Arsenal.com telling Arsenal Player on his promotion:
It is more than excitement, it is an absolute privilege and an honour. I know I have some big boots to fill with Pat having spent 44 years at the Club and that is going to be the hard part.
Pat has wished me all the best. I have not spoken to him too much about the job. I want to try and do it my way, whichever way that is. I will be learning on the job a little bit but myself and Neil Banfield are more than excited.
When asked on his own and Neil Banfield’s promotion he said:
It shows you that the youth set-up is right if the coaching staff who have been through [the Club] are deemed good enough to work with the first-team players. I think that’s the way it should be.
There is a brand and philosophy that we have to play. That is No 1 whether it is youth players, reserve players or first-team players.

- Arsenal are close to signing €80m midfielder for a ‘reduced price’
All of our kids have to be technically sound and able to play and that is the basis we all work off. First and foremost is the philosophy of the football club and the manager.
While Bould does believe in the promotion of attacking football, I have no doubt he will being adding his own input to defence. As a part of George Graham’s infamous back-four, there is no way he will accept the 49 goals conceded last term.
What do you think of Bould? Do you think he will have a significant influence on our defensive system? Do you feel he was the right man to be appointed as Assistant Manager? Feel free to leave a comment below or discuss Steve Bould in the allArsenal.com forums here!
