Although Arsenal are confident of wrapping up the deal for Cahill, it has also been reported that it will not be a simple cash deal with the Gunners expected to sweeten the deal by offering a player from their own ranks as well.
It has been reported that Cahill has a £17m release clause in his contract but also that manager Owen Coyle is looking to strengthen his squad over the summer. In an attempt to reduce the price for Cahill, Arsene is looking to exchange current up-and-comers Ignasi Miquel or Henri Lansbury on loan, or even offer wantaway striker Nicklas Bendtner on a permanent deal.
Another aspect that goes in Arsenal’s favour is Cahill’s desire to make the move with Manchester City reported to be losing interest in the defender and Tottenham needing to sell players before making more acquisitions.
While it is expected that at least one proven centre-back will come to the Emirates with Arsene publicly stating a need to bolster defence, a deal has yet to come to fruition. With a few heavy transfer links with potential centre-backs, such as Cahill, Samba and Jagielka, all that would be needed to calm Arsenal fans to finally see an official signing as the end of June approaches.
