Robin Van Persie’s incredible 30-goal haul has made him only the seventh Gunner to reach the impressive milestone, and only the third Arsenal man in the post war era (Thierry Henry in 2003/04 and Ronnie Rooke in 1947/48).
But there’s one more record that the Gunners captain and talisman has an opportunity to break, and that’s the all time Premier league goal scoring record for a 38-game season which is currently 31 goals jointly held by Alan Shearer and Christiano Ronaldo.
So if the flying Dutchman can net a brace against the Baggies in Sunday’s final game of the season he can become the new Premier league top goalscorer to put the cherry on top of an amazing season IF the Gunners can overcome West Brom, otherwise his efforts may just be in vain.
Arsene Wenger has labelled Robin van Persie’s goal scoring antics as “special” as he has demonstrated time and time again how important he is for the North London side. Wenger told Arsenal player:
Robin has done tremendously well. Even on Sunday [against Norwich] he got us back to 2-2 and scored again to make it 3-2.
Of course you don’t know what more to say about Robin’s season because, as the numbers tell you, only special players can achieve that.
- ‘Maybe it was a mistake’ admits Arsene Wenger on missed Arsenal signing
- Arsenal are among ‘20 clubs’ keen to sign 12 goal striker in the new year
- Willian reveals he has been left ‘frustrated’ by his start at Arsenal
You want some more goals around Robin and for him to keep at these numbers. Of course you can beat the records.
It’s a shame that Van Persie suffered a dip in form recently prior to the Norwich game as he could have easily broken the record. The Dutch striker has hit the woodwork an incredible 10 times, the most of any player this season and with 12 assists in the league too it’s easy to see why the dangerous striker has won a few Player of the Year awards.
With the Gunners needing a win against West Brom this Sunday to secure third place, Van Persie will likely be called upon for the goal scoring duties. Fingers crossed he can produce the goods this weekend to become the Premier Leagues top goalscorer in a 38 game season!
