Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson has warned first-choice right-back Bacary Sagna that he wants his shirt next season. The England international is desperate to go to the World Cup next summer and knows the only way of achieving his dream is by ousting Sagna as the club’s No 1 right-back.
Jenkinson was signed from Charlton two years ago and turned in some impressive performances when Sagna was injured. He signed a new, improved contract with the Gunners last November, and now he wants to establish himself as a first-team regular.
According to Metro ,he said :
It would be a dream for me to go to Brazil for the World Cup next summer and if I can play for Arsenal every week then I would give myself a big chance of doing that.
It’s a massive season coming up for me. I’ve had a couple of years at Arsenal where I’ve had time to settle in, establish myself in the squad, raise my level and get more chances in the team.
Hopefully I can get more playing time than I did last season because that was a bit frustrating at times.
But I think this is an opportunity to show that I’m ready to play week-in, week-out.
With Bacary Sagna ruled out by a broken leg for the first the first three months of last season, Jenkinson grabbed his chance to make his mark in the Premier League.

But Sagna’s return to full fitness inevitably meant a return to the subs’ bench for Jenkinson, who admits he now faces a tough job to dislodge the experienced French international from Arsene Wenger’s team.
He added :
Bacary finished up playing every week last season and most people would say he’s first choice.
He’s a fantastic player and has been for many years. I’ve got the utmost respect for him.
But he knows I want to challenge him for his place. I hope I can push on to the next level and ultimately take his place and play every week.
Carl Jenkinson had a sparkling campaign, making his England debut and becoming a genuine competitor for Bacary Sagna. He excelled in many difficult matches, including Bayern Munich away, and showed a belief that was lacking last season when he often looked like a dear in headlights.
He’s strong, but also deceptively quick, allowing him to keep up with the quickest wingers, but also knock them off the ball. His positioning can still use a little bit of work, and he is still raw on occasionHe still needs work on the ball, but it definitely improved this season and his crossing remains a plus.
He’s definitely a capable back-up who can fill in for long periods, but I hesitate to say that Jenkinson is ready to be the full-time starter next season, which is why it’d be nice to see Sagna stay for at least one more campaign.
So i feel he needs one more season before he can become a regular starter for Arsenal. What do you say Gooners?
