Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho in January, as Arsene Wenger looks to sign a top class defensive midfielder to fill one of Arsenal’s problematic areas.
The Gunners missed out on the 22-year-old Portugese international in the summer, after their reported £15m bid was refused, but negotiations ended on good terms, and a move could still be on the cards.
However, according to The Mail on Sunday, Wenger is reading a fresh £20m bid for Carvalho once the window opens in January as he looks to solve Arsenal’s well documented defensive problems.
Carvalho, who played twice for Portugal in the World Cup, is one of the few potentially world class players on offer in the January transfer window, and with Sporting Lisbon out of the Champions League, the Portugese club may be prepared to cash in on their prized asset.
Mathieu Flamini has recently been occupying the defensive midfield area for Arsenal, but with Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta sidelined through injury, Wenger is short of options in that area, and Carvalho is undoubtedly the sort of player that Arsenal fans will be hoping to see arriving in January.

The youngster, who can also play at centre-back and was valued at £30m in the summer, was also targeted by Manchester United, but after they opted to sign Daley Blind the path seems to have opened up for Wenger to sign a target that he has long admired.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that Wenger opts to part with his cash, and a player of the calibre of William Carvalho would provide a major boost to the Gunners as they head into the second half of the season, facing a battle for a top four spot and still retaining an interest in the Champions League, with a last-16 clash against Monaco looming ahead.
