The World Cup winner with Germany has taken on the role of collector of fines for any breaches of club rules and the central defender has proved to be a stickler for regulations.
Chamberlain revealed that Mertesacker takes his role very seriously and anyone guilty of breaking the rules is fined and there are no exceptions.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said:
Per is the enforcer. He’s the fines master so he keeps everyone in check and he’s always issuing fines to make sure that people are on time.
He’s open to dispute as well! He’s got his own little committee and you can voice your argument if you think you were late for a good enough reason. Usually his final word rules and he doesn’t get fined because he’s never late. He’s too efficient!
He’s got me with a few. Being late for meetings, dinner, breakfast in hotels, being late into training, using my phone in the wrong areas of the training ground – there’s a lot of fines like that.

They’re pretty straightforward but it’s really important that we all keep our time and keep our standards high. Per makes sure he stays on top of everyone in that respect.
Mertesacker has made himself invaluable to Arsenal and his partnership with Laurent Koscielny is one of the best in the Premier League. He’s also a natural leader and is a player with a superb team ethic and is a gifted organiser too. He signed a new long-term contract with the club and has also captained the team on multiple occasions.
He is the right man to control the team on and off the field, which was evident from the confrontation with Ozil last year when the play-maker failed to applaud the supporters after the 6-3 loss to Manchester City at Ethiad.
Keep the good work going Mertesacker! What do you say Gooners?
