Arsenal’s summer signing from Southampton Calum Chambers admits that he is surprised at how quickly he has adapted to his new environment. Chambers was one of the five signings made by Arsenal this summer and he is the third Southampton player Arsene Wenger has signed, the other two being Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Chambers hardly played a year in the Premier league before being snapped up by Arsenal. Such is his quality that Arsene Wenger paid £16 million for his services. Chambers started his career as a central midfielder but ended up as a right back for Southampton. He can also play in central defence, the position he has so often placed for us.
Chambers told arsenal.com:
When you get the opportunity to come to a club like this you can’t turn it down. How quickly it has all happened for me, I have been a bit surprised [by that]. Everyone has welcomed me so well that it has made it easier for me to settle and be as confident as I am here. At the start it was a whirlwind, it was all new.
I had been at Southampton for 12 years, but I am starting to settle down now. All the lads and the staff at the club have been great towards me and I am really starting to find my feet. It gave me goosebumps – I was singing the tune in my head! It was a really proud moment for me and my family and one I will never forget. Making my debut in the Champions League was a big challenge for me. Mentally and physically the whole occasion was just special.
All is well for Chambers at the moment and he is increasingly looking like a brilliant piece of business. Let’s just hope that he just doesn’t become too Arsenalish and injure himself. He has played exceptionally well for a 19 year old at a new club and if he keeps his feet grounded and improves his game, we have potentially a world class player.
