We’ve barely seen or heard from Mikel Arteta recently, but he’s still our club’s captain. He plays a large role behind the scenes, and knows the club and the players back to front. In a recent interview with Match of the Day, he spoke about Arsenal’s most influential players, listing the three most creative players at the club.
Unsurprisingly, Mesut Özil was one of the first names on his lips, with the German playmaker showing exactly what he’s capable of this season. He is far and away the most creative player in Europe at the moment, and that isn’t just Arsenal bias, there are stats to back it up (via the Daily Mail).
He’s joined in Arteta’s list by Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, all of whom the captain claims are capable of changing a game single handedly.
“[Özil & Alexis] are probably the most creative players in the team along with Santi Cazorla. They are the guys who can make the difference for us at any moment,” he said.
“Even if we’re not playing well, you know that they can always provide a spark and win a game for us. We need players right at the top level playing with consistency and these two give us that.
“We need to find the right balance in the team to give these players freedom on the pitch to affect the result.”

It’s certainly hard to argue with Özil and Cazorla’s inclusion, as the pair are unquestionably two of Europe’s most creative players. They are the creative hubs of Arsenal, and Özil in particular is capable of picking passes no other player on the planet can.
Alexis is certainly a top quality player, and Arteta is right when he says he’s a game changer who can make the difference in a split second. He’s arguably not the most creative though, and although he’s obviously able to play a pass, his strengths lie in individual moments of brilliance rather than laying goals on for his teammates.
