Spanish football icon David Villa has revealed that he was “90% sure” he would have joined Arsenal back in 2013 (via BBC).
It was a period in Arsenal’s recent history that can be characterised by some immense changes in the playing personnel.
Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, and Robin Van Persie were all sold between 2011 and 2012 with Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, and Olivier Giroud arriving to replace them in the years that followed.
But Van Persie’s goals were never really replaced as the Gunners went years without signing a top-class goalscorer.
Well, it looks as if they were closer to signing a world-class striker than many expect, as a former Spain and FC Barcelona star explained in a recent interview.
“I felt 90% in that moment that I [would] go to Arsenal and Arsene Wenger,” said David Villa in an interview talking about his exit from FC Barcelona in 2013 and how he signed for Atletico Madrid.
“We were in a lot of meetings and a lot of calls. But in that moment we didn’t arrive to the deal, Atletico Madrid arrived and in three or four days fixed everything.
“I don’t know what would have happened if I’d signed for Arsenal. I’m very happy that I signed for Atletico Madrid, not just for winning the league but for everything. I’m very happy to have made that choice.”
It would have been great to see a player like David Villa in an Arsenal shirt. The club really missed out on a top-class centre-forward during that period and the former Spain international is just that. The thought of him linking up with a prime Mesut Ozil is a frustrating one.
