I am of the opinion that we should avoid signing Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira this summer, regardless of the fact that he is out of contract with the Spanish club.
I have been vocal about my feelings on the matter, but a number of other Arsenal fans have disagreed with me, and have insisted that the German international is exactly the kind of player we need.

With that in mind, here are five reasons why we should, and five reasons why we shouldn’t sign Sami Khedira come the end of the season:
Should we?

5) World class midfielder
There is no denying that Khedira is a top quality midfielder, and he would definitely add something to the team.
It’s not often that players of his calibre become available, so you can see why many want us to snap him up.
4) Free!
His contract is up this summer, so he wouldn’t cost us a penny in transfer fees.
That is a factor that is likely to appeal to Arsene Wenger, and it may free up more funds to invest elsewhere.
3) We need more of a presence in midfield
We unquestionably need more of a physical presence in midfield, and although Francis Coquelin has done well, he can’t provide the steel and grit in midfield all on his own.
2) Hugely experienced
Khedira has been playing at the highest level for years, and he has been a major player for Real Madrid in that time.
He has experience in the top leagues and the top competitions, and would certainly add experience to the side.
1) Proven winner
The 27-year-old doesn’t only have experience in these competitions, but experience winning them as well. He can boast the World Cup, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Champions League titles among other accolades, and will be keen to add to that growing list should he come to Arsenal.
Shouldn’t we?
5) Huge wages
He may not cost us anything in transfer fees, but he will certainly demand a massive wage packet.
We have smashed our wage structure recently to accommodate the likes of Mesut Özil and Alexis Sanchez, but should we really be doing the same again for someone like Khedira?
4) Horrendous injury record
The Los Blancos star has suffered badly with injuries in recent years, with a list so long it almost rivals Abou Diaby’s.
We don’t need to be carrying another injured player through the season, especially one who will no doubt be on wages well in excess of £100,000 per week.
3) Not what we need
While he would certainly add more of a physical presence in midfield, he isn’t exactly the type of player we need.
He is more of a box-to-box player than a defensive midfielder, and Wenger is already struggling to fit in the players we have.
We need a player in the mould of Coquelin, not a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.
2) Better options out there
I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up if we signed Khedira, but as stated above he is not what we need. There are players far more suited to our needs at the moment, and his arrival would surely put the kibosh on any other potential acquisitions in midfield.
He would certainly be better than nothing, but there are plenty of other players I would rather see arrive in his stead.
1) He wouldn’t settle for being rotated
If he’s looking to leave Real Madrid, then he will be looking for a club where he can get regular first team football.
He isn’t the right type of player to play the lone defensive midfield role, and would therefore have to be rotated in midfield with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, and Jack Wilshere.
It’s unlikely that he will be happy with this, and could just cause problems in the long term.
