We have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan recently (via the Express), but the rumours disappeared after he signed a new contract with the Bundesliga side.
We have been given fresh hope however, with the German international insisting that he is still seeking a new challenge, as reported by the Express.
Arsenal transfer news
He only extended his contract by a year (via the Express), which means his current deal will expire in the summer of 2017. We may have to pay slightly more if we want to secure his signature, but his latest comments certainly won’t have deterred his suitors.
“You can always see from two different perspectives: some will say, okay, he has extended, and if he should go next year, the club will therefore still get a lot of money. So it’s all good,” Gundogan said, as quoted by the Express.
“And others say: Again, it’s only one year.
“Everyone has to form his own opinion – I just want to be honest. I appreciate this wonderful club very much, but my life plan also looks at some time with a new challenge.”
I for one am glad Gundogan has signed a new contract, as I don’t see him as the player we need at the moment. He is unquestionably talented, but he is more of a deep lying playmaker, when what we need is a dedicated defensive midfielder.

There are a number of far better options available to us, and I don’t believe we should be chasing Gundogan – regardless of his comments.
