Unai Emery has talked about whether he expects Nicolas Pepe to start against Burnley on Saturday (via Arsenal.com).
There’s a considerable amount of excitement surrounding Arsenal’s new signings but few are attracting the attention quite like Nicolas Pepe.
The Gunners’ new record-signing arrived in a £72 million deal from Lille over the summer and made his debut at the weekend.
The Ivory Coast international played the last 20 minutes of the 1-0 win over Newcastle and now, head coach Unai Emery has been asked whether he will start Pepe from the off against Burnley.
“I am going to decide on Friday because now is a small difference for my decision about the player,” Emery said in his pre-match press conference.
“It depends how they will be tomorrow in the training. But Pepe is training with us, is improving with us, is knowing us, our idea, our style, is able to understand his team-mates better.
“Physically also, getting better. He’s more close to helping us than he was at the beginning, after giving us an impact during the match.”
It’s a promising set of quotes. Nicolas Pepe is still returning to full fitness after a long summer so the best bet would be to ease him into first-team football. However, with matches against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur coming up in the next few weeks, Emery may be forced into playing the new man.
