Sporting Lisbon are in the midst of talks with highly rated defensive midfielder William Carvalho, as they’re afraid his current £35m release clause is at risk of being activated, according to Portuguese publication Record.
We’ve long been linked with a move for the 23-year-old, as we’ve been without a dedicated defensive midfielder for years. The fact that we’ve recently signed Mohamed Elneny makes it far less likely that we’re still chasing Carvalho, but it’s always possible Arsene Wenger sees the Egyptian international as more of a box-to-box midfielder than an out and out defensive mid.
The report suggests we are joined by Manchester United in the hunt for Carvalho’s signature, and Sporting are doing everything they can to tie him down to a new deal. They’re currently in talks with the promising midfielder, but the report suggests things have stalled.
He’s currently on a tiny £1000 salary, which is absolutely minuscule compared to many other players of the same calibre. It would obviously be hard for him to turn down a big money move to the Premier League – or any of the top leagues for that matter – so Sporting are right to be concerned about losing him.
Whether we’re the ones who will lure him away is definitely questionable though, as it’s hard to see Wenger forking our £35m after having just signed Elneny.
Carvalho was one of the brightest young defensive midfielders a couple of years ago, but he hasn’t quite kicked on as much as many would have thought. He could still potentially be one of the best around, but is he currently worth his release clause?

There are far more pressing concerns for us right now, and better ways to invest our money. Sporting may well end up losing Carvalho to a bigger money with more financial firepower, but it’s not likely to be us.
