Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas may be hated by a huge number of Arsenal fans, but he still clearly has plenty of appreciation for some of his former Arsenal teammates. The ex-Barcelona star was asked about the best players he’s played with in his career so far, and on the topic of midfielders he suggested that both Mathieu Flamini and Gilberto Silva were better than Andres Iniesta and Xavi, as reported by the Metro.
Having spent time at Barcelona, Fabregas has obviously played with some of the world’s best players. The fact that he puts Flamini at the top of the list certainly says something, and his appreciation of the Frenchman is incredible.
“I had two years playing next to Flamini and he covered me,” he said.
“He covers so much ground.
“If I say Iniesta or Xavi – yeah it’s fantastic for the eyes but in real football it’s not real for me.
“But if I had to choose one it would have to be between Gilberto Silva and Flamini.”

Fabregas is obviously talking about Flamini during his first spell with Arsenal, when the dogged midfielder was arguably at his best. He’s past his prime now and is an entirely different player, unable to cover nearly as much ground unfortunately.
Although Flamini is now frustrating a huge number of Arsenal fans – with many counting down the days until he leaves the club for a second time – he was once part of the most dominant Arsenal side in history.
It’s questionable whether he was ever really better than Xavi and Iniesta, but in terms of adding balance to a team and playing alongside a midfielder like Fabregas, he was right up there.
Arsenal transfer news
Hopefully we’ll be able to find a new partnership – or midfield trio – that mirrors the one we had all those years ago, with Mohamed and Elneny and Francis Coquelin looking to step up and play their part.
