Former Arsenal star John Hartson has criticised Calum Chambers, claiming the youngster just doesn’t look like an Arsenal player.
Chambers arrived from Southampton last season, and looked to be an excellent prospect of the future. He struggled when deployed at right-back, but appeared to have a future in the centre of defence.
His performance against Liverpool recently has thrown that all into question though, as the young defender looked all at sea against Cristian Benteke. He struggled both aerially and on the ground, and Francis Coquelin, Gabriel, and Petr Cech had to bail him out on a number of occasions.
Hartson didn’t hold back when talking about the 20-year-old, and questioned whether he had a future at the club.
“They added Calum Chambers for £16 million from Southampton. Calum Chambers at the minute looks out of his depth,” he said, as quoted by talkSPORT.
“They’ve switched him from right-back he’s tried him at centre-back, he looks as if the young boy is just a little bit not quite on it right now.
“He just doesn’t really look like an Arsenal player at the minute. He needs to improve.
“He needs work on his heading, his ball work in training.”
Despite his poor display against Liverpool, Chambers is still a hugely promising youngster.
Arsenal transfer news
He is clearly lacking experience, and being thrown in at the deep end against Liverpool – after both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker were ruled out – was too much for him. He showed glimpses of real quality last season though, and hopefully he can continue his development and become the player Arsene Wenger clearly sees in him.
