Craig Bellamy was a guest on Sky Sports Monday Night Football this week, and voiced a few opinions on Mesut Özil that can be described as nothing short of ridiculous. The retired Welsh star was singing Aaron Ramsey’s praises after his goal and assist against Sunderland, and suggested that his compatriot deserves to be playing in the No.10 role ahead of Özil (via the Metro).
The 36-year-old insisted that “it’s not just [him] being biased”, and claimed Ramsey had to be utilised in a central attacking role despite the unbelievable form of our German playmaker.
“For me Aaron has to play in a three [in midfield]. But he has to be in the centre for me, if you are going to ask him to sit then you are restricting a lot of his game,” he said.
“Özil has played left at certain times, and Aaron has played right a lot as well. It’s not just me being biased, I’ve known Aaron since he was five years of age, but i would play him central instead of Özil.
“It might be a difficult statement at this moment because of Özil’s [form], but I feel personally watching his game and watching him develop over the last couple of years that he is one of the top central players in world football when he’s fit and he proved that last summer when Barcelona wanted him.”
Ramsey has certainly shown that he’s capable of playing as an attacking midfielder in the past, but to suggest that he should replace Özil is downright ridiculous. The ex-Real Madrid man is in the form of his career at the moment, and is one of the main reasons we are currently sat second in the Premier League.

Özil has unquestionably been one of the best players in Europe this season, and not only can you see his quality every time he steps foot on the pitch, but his numbers speak for themselves. He’s leading the assist charts in Europe by quite some distance, and has created far more chances than any other player in the continent. When you take into account the league dominance of teams like Bayern Munich, PSG, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, it’s an even more impressive statistic.
Bellamy is an experienced star, and during his career he spent time with some huge clubs; Liverpool and Manchester City being two examples. He clearly has a biased towards his compatriots however, regardless of what he says.
Arsenal transfer news
There is no player in the world that deserves to displace Özil the way he’s playing at the moment, whatever Craig Bellamy says. Even at his best back in the 2013/14 season when Ramsey was unplayable, you’d still struggle to strip Özil of his favoured No.10 role.
