Mesut Özil comes in for a lot of criticism, much of it undeserved. Most recently he’s been blasted by Newcastle legend Mickey Quinn, who claims he’s too slow and ill suited for the Premier League, as reported by the Express.
The German World Cup winner is likely to feature against Newcastle this weekend, and will be hoping to play a starring role. He may well be especially motivated following Quinn’s comments, with the retired star slamming him for not dictating the pace of games.
“He’s too slow for the Premier League, he’s too one paced,” Quinn said, as quoted by talkSPORT (via the Express).
“He doesn’t dictate the pace of a Premier League game.
“He drifts in an out of a game with little flashes of brilliance, but this is the Premier League and he needs to do it regularly.”
Özil may not have settled into the Premier League instantly, and seemed to struggle with the rigours of the English game when he first arrived. Now into his third year with the club however, he has adapted superbly and is starting to justify his massive price tag.

It’s easy to see why not everyone understands the 26-year-old’s game, as his displays are often understated. But those who truly understand football can see the quality he possesses, and know he silently pulls the strings while making everything he does look effortless.
