On 7 June 1928, former Arsenal left-back Dave Bowen was born in Nantyffyllon, South Wales according to the Official Club website.
Bowen started off his professional career for his home town side Northampton Town in 1947 before switching to Highbury three years later. The Welsh international was signed by manager Tom Whittaker for a fee in the region of 1000 as an understudy for Joe Mercer.
Although Dave Bowen was not a renowned goal scorer- having scored only two goals- his defensive consistency propelled Arsenal to a First Division triumph in the 1952/53 season. During his nine year stay at the club, he managed to make 162 appearances, making no starts off the bench.
According to Arsenal.com, Dave Bowen returned to his boyhood club Northampton Town as player-manager after leaving the Gunners in July 1959, successfully plotting their rise to top flight football.
Bowen managed his national side for nearly a decade and also served as Northampton’s secretary before passing on in September 1995.
