Despite the prestige that comes with the shirt number, our current stars will be forgiven for being reluctant to claim the jersey such has been the bad luck which has surrounded it over the past few years.
Park Chu-Young, Eduardo Da Silva, Julio Baptista, Jose Antonio Reyes, Francis Jeffers and Davor Suker have all worn the shirt and failed to succeed – for various different reasons.
However, our current first team players will be confident that they can reverse the trend. Here are five players who could assume the No.9 shirt.

5) Danny Welbeck
Currently donning the No.23 shirt, Welbeck has made no secret of his desire to play as a central striker on a regular basis; perhaps a new shirt can force the issue?
The former Manchester United man has enjoyed a satisfactory campaign with us after suffering a few niggling injuries, but the jury is still out as to whether he can lead the line for an elite club.
