Former Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez has revealed that he is more comfortable at Arsenal than he was at Barcelona, and that the Gunners ‘suit him’ better. The Chilean, who has been lethal for us so far this season, is revelling in the direct style of football on display in the Premier League. He also went on to say that player-for-player, Arsenal are every bit as good as the Catalan giants.
Alexis Sanchez’s ability to adapt to English football has been praised by his manager Arsene Wenger and several other players and commentators, but the Chilean has admitted that he believes this is because the Premier League is more suited to his style of play than La Liga. The forward seems to enjoy the challenge of running at defences and has found the net 14 times in 22 games since his switch from Spain.
Though he won five trophies in his three seasons at the Nou Camp, having joined from Udinese in 2011, Sanchez never really became a regular in the first team, often being rested in big games. At Arsenal though, he has played almost every game of the season.
It cost me a lot to adapt to playing the Barcelona way.
The first year was OK and then the second year I was better, but I needed time. Arsenal play beautiful football, but Barcelona play in a way that no other team in the world does. English football is more direct, more end to end, but I like that. It suits the way I want to play.
My team-mates have helped me adapt. If my team-mates were not so good, then I would not have done so well. It is that easy. The quality here is impressive. You only need to take a glance around [a training session] to see that. It is the same level, more or less, as there was at Barcelona. We do different things in training, but player for player, it is just about the same.
Sanchez has brought a whole new level of enthusiasm and determination into the team and along with fellow new signing Danny Welbeck has upped the tempo of Arsenal going forward. The team has certainly benefited from his presence, and it bodes well for us that he is happy and settled here. A player of his quality will surely make a difference to the course of our season and when players like Ozil and Wilshere return come January Arsenal will start to really pile the pressure on the top placed teams.
