Germany Olympics coach Horst Hrubesch has said he is “annoyed” by Arsenal’s treatment of Serge Gnabry. The manager said he was disappointed that his player hasn’t been given enough opportunities by The Gunners (via Sky Sports).
He’s made just 10 Premier League appearances for Arsenal but Serge Gnabry has really shone for the German Olympic Team in Rio. The winger has scored three goals in his first two matches for the team, helping secure draws against Mexico and South Korea. His brace against South Korea included a very impressive late free kick to snatch a point for his country.
Gnabry has excelled in his role for the German team so far and his manager has taken notice. “He’s shown what he can do to everybody,” Hrubesch told website sport1.de. “I’m just annoyed that he is never shown this by his club.”
Gnabry’s record for Arsenal certainly adds some weight to Hrubesch’s claims. The 21 year-old has made just 17 appearances for The Gunners in all competitions since his promotion to the first team squad in 2012. Gnabry spent the first half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion but made just one Premier League appearance for The Baggies.
However it is important not to overlook the German’s injury record during that time. The winger has accumulated a number of niggling injuries in recent years and even missed the entirety of the 2013-14 campaign with a serious knee inflammation. Serge Gnabry’s development has undoubtedly been hampered from the number of injuries so it’s perhaps a little unfair of Hrubesch to blame Arsenal for a lack of playing time.
