Olivier Giroud has been suffering a crisis of confidence recently, having lost his starting spot in the Arsenal team to Theo Walcott. He bagged two in the first six minutes for France against Denmark this past Sunday afternoon however, which is sure to give him a much needed confidence booster.
He linked up well with Manchester United summer signing Anthony Martial, latching onto a superb pass from the young striker to smash home his first. Giroud’s shooting wasn’t at its best, but his movement was excellent, and he was getting into all the right positions.
He found some space in the build up to his second goal, pulling away from his defender. He hit a Lucas Digne cross first time, but saw it saved by the keeper. It fell fortuitously back at his feet however, and he was able to knock it into the open net.
Giroud is unlikely to get his starting spot back from Walcott any time soon, as the pacy Englishman has been in phenomenal form since making the forward role his own. He has developed a superb understanding with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil, and the extra mobility he has over Giroud makes him far more dangerous.
Walcott’s holdup play has also surprisingly improved, which is the main thing Giroud offered when chosen ahead of the former Southampton star.

Hopefully Giroud will come back from international duty in more confident mood though, and provide some much needed competition for Walcott. It may push both players to improve, and will allow us different options if needed.
