German playmaker Mesut Ozil could barely contain his happiness after Arsenal beat Bayern Munich yesterday, with the player netting our second to put the game to bed. Following the game, he went on record to thank the fans for their support and also highlighted the massive importance of this victory to the side (via Arsenal.com). Ozil was full of praise for the opposition and admitted that the game was an extremely close one but also expressed his opinion that Arsenal were deserved victors.
Ozil has started this season with a point to prove; the German had been a regular target for several pundits who criticised his work rate and questioned his massive price tag. However, he is worth every penny and more so far this season, and has notched up two goals and six assists in all competitions for the Gunners, already overtaking his previous season’s tally of five assists.
“Firstly we’re very, very happy. To win against Bayern Munich is really hard and we knew that it would be a tough game but you could see during the match that we created a lot of opportunities, especially in the first half, when Manuel Neuer made some superb saves,” Ozil told Arsenal Player.
“But ultimately I think we deserved to win. They had more possession but we had the clearer chances and that’s why we’re really pleased to have got the three points today.
“We concentrated from the first minute until the last minute. We believed in ourselves and we knew that we had made massive mistakes in the first two games. Today was our last chance – we had to win. We did that and now we’re back in the game. We’re all the happier for that.
“We showed heart and the fans supported us superbly. The most important thing is the three points. We have to believe in ourselves, keep working hard and then we’ll be on a good path.”

Ozil had a slow start to the game yesterday, as Arsenal struggled to get a touch on the ball. Early on, our first chance of the game also fell to the German but he was unable to connect with a firm shot from a tight angle. However, he contributed to our high pressing style in the midfield and ran non-stop for the full ninety minutes, including arriving in the box in time to receive Bellerin’s cross in injury time. His return of a goal was fully deserved for the way he has been playing.
“I’m really satisfied with my performances. I’m on a good way, I feel at ease and you can see that the team and the manager give me their trust.”, Ozil said.
“[For my goal] I had a shot at goal and Manuel saved it brilliantly. After two or three seconds I saw that the referee was signalling a goal and I was relieved. It was clear that we had won the game at that point and I’m pleased with that.”
It was a great game and a great performance all around, for sure. Now the players just need to carry this forward into the weekend against Everton. COYG!
