The midfielder had been linked with the Gunners recently with Montpellier president Louis Nicollin confirming on the club’s official Twitter feed last week that they had accepted two bids for Belhanda.
The Morocco international finished as the joint leading goalscorer last season with 10 goals, as the French outfit struggled to muster a substantial title defence ending the season in ninth place. He was named the young player of year for their title winning season.
The Ukrainian side fended off interest from England to gain Belhanda’s signature which may disappoint some Gooners who hoped the creative Montpellier star could link up again with former team mate Olivier Giroud.
Despite the speculation Arsenal have plenty of versatile midfielders and require a star central attacking midfielder. Belhanda could have been an interesting signing however he is not the quality of player that we need to challenge Rosicky, Cazorla and Wilshere for the ‘in the hole’ role.
Arsene Wenger already has Oxlade-Chamberlain who has more potential than the former Montpellier man and is similarly as versatile. Personally I’m glad the Belhanda to Arsenal rumours remained just that, otherwise it could have been another typical cheap Wenger signing.
