Former Arsenal target David Villa is closing in on a move to Athletico Madrid with Barcelona confirming an agreement is made in principle.
Arsene Wenger was chasing Spain’s all time leading goal scorer in the January transfer window however failed in his attempt, but the Frenchman was expected to secure the strikers services this summer.
It has been revealed by Barca officially that they will sell Villa to Athletico for a maximum of 5.1 million Euros, with 2.1 due this season and 2 more if Villa remains with Los Colchoneros next year plus a further million should he be at the Madrid club the season after. The Catalan giants also will receive 50% of any sell on fee in the future, however at 31-years-old his stock is steadily decreasing.
North London rivals Spurs were also keen on the Spaniard, however he will remain in La Liga, passing up the opportunity to live and play in England. The rumours have cooled this summer so there is no great surprise that the Gunners missed out on signing the striker, however at such a low signing fee it is a shame that Arsenal didn’t get in on the act.
But it seems a done deal now, so Gooners must continue to hope the Gonzalo Higuain saga can come to a positive close soon.
