Arsene Wenger has selected a handful of exciting future stars to attend the 2013 pre-season Asia Tour, with the final travelling squad confirmed on Arsenal’s official website.
Starlets such as Chuba Akpom, Serge Gnabry, Kris Olsson and Gedion Zelalem will rub shoulders with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Lukas Podolski and Mikel Arteta who will captain the squad in the absence of injured club captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The 24-man group who will play matches in Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, fly out to Jakarta on Thursday for the first leg. There will be some notable absences however with Confederations Cup finalists Santi Cazorla and Nacho Monreal on holiday after this summers competition, and new signing Yaya Sanogo is set to face Uruguay in France’s Under-20 World Cup final. Vermaelen has also been confirmed as receiving treatment on a back injury, while Gervinho is suffering from a sickness and will remain behind.

The more experienced youngsters in Eisfeld, Aneke, Martinez, Ryo and Miquel will see this as a big opportunity to impress, while the aforementioned youngsters above will play for the opportunity to get a look-in for some of Arsenal’s youth-orientated fixtures such as in the Capital One Cup and just experience being around and playing with some of Arsenal and England’s top talents.
Personally I’m most excited about seeing Akpom gain some playing time, he’s been incredibly prolific in the youth set-up and is tipped for a big future in red and white. The powerful striker can hopefully challenge new signing Sanogo for some first team action this season.
