Isaac Hayden, the Arsenal Under-21 captain, featured in the Capital One Cup game against Southampton. While we eventually lost the game 2-1, the youngster was one of our better performers and played the full 90 minutes at the centre back position. With our lack of squad depth in that position, it was good to see a youth product doing so well, and he may yet become a regular in the first team this season.
Speaking after the match, Hayden appeared pleased and admitted that it was a fantastic experience playing at the Emirates for the first team; he also expressed his wish that he would be given more opportunities to play in the future. Despite the loss in his home debut game, he was optimistic about his chances.
Despite the result, it was obviously fantastic to play at the Emirates. It’s the first time I’ve played in front of a home crowd which was good. I’ve been on the bench a few times so it was good to finally get on the pitch.
It’s a great starter, a great first taste and you want more of it. That’s the aim, you want to be playing at the highest level of professional football that you can.
The youngster looks to be a bright prospect for the future and we may see him feature more frequently in this season itself, maybe in the FA Cup, in which Arsenal are defending champions.
