Hector Bellerin could be on course for a row with Arsene Wenger after the defender declared he wants to play for Spain in the summer despite his manager’s wishes. Wenger wants Bellerin to rest and prepare for the new season after an ankle injury (via The Independent).
With just one match left in this season, many players’ eyes will be on the long summer break and potential tournament football.
One such man is Hector Bellerin who is eligible to play for Spain in the Under-21 European Championships in Poland this summer.
However, manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t want the right-back to play after a recurring injury has held Bellerin back this season.
“He has not come back to his level since he has been injured. I think for a while he was [still feeling his ankle],” Wenger said.
“It is not ideal after a long season. He should have a rest and prepare for next season.”

Hector Bellerin seems to disagree with his manager’s analysis and is keen on playing for the Spaniards.
“No. I really want to play,” he said when asked about Wenger’s comment. “Representing Spain is very important. If [Spain Under-21 manager Alert] Celades gives me the chance I’ll be there.
“Those are opinions of the managers. I have to keep working.
“The truth is that I had a difficult injury but I think that I am at 100% now and I’ll try to prove it when I get the chance.”
It’s difficult to judge who is right in this situation. If there is a chance that Hector Bellerin could aggravate his ankle injury and make a long-lasting problem there then he absolutely should not play. However, it does seem harsh to tell a youngster they cannot represent their country. Either way, here’s hoping that Hector Bellerin shows for pre-season training at Arsenal fit and ready to go, regardless of whether he plays for Spain or not.
