Rob Holding has revealed that the Arsenal players held a ballot to decide the club’s next captain (via Sky Sports).
We’re over a month into the new season but we still don’t know who the official and permanent captain of Arsenal is.
Laurent Koscielny had been the skipper until his summer departure but a number of players have worn the armband since then.
Granit Xhaka is expected to get the nod but Rob Holding has revealed that the players have chosen their representative themselves.
“We all did a vote the other week so we’ll see what happens and see who gets named,” Rob Holding said in an interview.
“It was just a case of writing names down and then giving them to the manager and he will go through them – obviously with his input – and we’ll see what happens.
“There is a lot of leaders in that team who are helping each other out and pushing each other on.”
Holding then went on to name some of the leaders in the dressing room, citing Xhaka as well as new signing David Luiz.
“I love Granit in the changing room. I think he is great. He is really switched on to people being late, people using the phones. He is quick to dish out the fines.
“I think he is a great leader and just another positive person to have in the changing room.
“He is very demanding and makes demands of us. He puts accountability on ourselves, which is important as a leader.
“The way David Luiz has come in and when he is talking in front of the group he speaks really well. He speaks highly of us so he’s a good addition to bring in.”
It’s an interesting approach and probably the best one. The captain should act as the players’ representative towards the management and coaching team. It makes sense that the players themselves should choose who that is.
