Despite all the transfer talk this summer, Olivier Giroud insists he is more than capable of spearheading our attack, and can improve further on the impressive form he showed in the second half of last season (via The Independent).
Giroud splits opinion among Arsenal fans, but he has done a superb job in the absence of anyone better. He may not be the world class striker we need, but he still boasts undeniable quality.
As the report suggests, we have been heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid’s French forward Karim Benzema. Giroud is clearly confident that he can compete with his compatriot for a starting spot, and still has plenty to offer the squad.
“I showed great mental strength last year and I had good stats,” Giroud said.
“I always try to improve myself and I feel with the team, so yes, I am sure I can bring something more to the team and to my team-mates.”
The 28-year-old has clearly been spending too much time with Arsene Wenger, as he is echoing the manager’s sentiments regarding “mental strength”.

“When you want to win the league it is always a mix of skill and mental quality, technique and tactical,” Giroud continued.
“You cannot win the league without mental strength, so obviously we need that and I think we have got it in our squad, the team is fantastic, like our understanding between us together. I think we can do well with that.”
You have to admire Giroud’s tenacity and confidence, especially in the face of the criticism he so regularly receives. If Benzema – or any other striker of that calibre – were to arrive however, you would expect him to be relegated straight to the bench.
Arsenal transfer news
It would be fantastic to see a new arrival before the window slams shut, but if one is not forthcoming, then hopefully Giroud is right about being the right man for the job.
