Club captain Mikel Arteta looks set to return to action ahead of schedule, as he’s already back in full training weeks before he was expected to be, according to the Metro.
We’ve experienced our usual glut of injuries this season, with a number of key players spending significant amounts of time on the sidelines. Arteta obviously isn’t one of those that we’re desperate to see back, but we need as much depth as we can muster given our current injury situation and the busy schedule at the moment.
The Metro’s report suggests the Spaniard wasn’t due back until mid January, but reveal that he took part in New Year’s Day training with the rest of the team.
We’re unlikely to see him back in action too quickly, and obviously not against Newcastle. It’s possible he’ll be fit for the FA Cup clash against Sunderland, but that too seems unlikely.
With injuries to a number of midfielders (via the Metro) – Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, and Jack Wilshere all out of action for quite some time – we need options available on the bench. If we were to suffer anymore injuries we’d be in serious trouble, so even having an ageing Mikel Arteta available is a boost.
