Everyone keeps talking of the positions we need to strengthen. Even Santi Carzola seems to be weighing in with his two cents on the matter. It was interesting to hear Carzola mention Iker Casillas and Iniesta… more so Casillas. The reason for this, is no one seems to be worried about the goal keeping department and instead keep asking Wenger to strengthen the midfield and strikeforce. It’s like they are happy with Szcezny and the progress he has made but is that enough? Progress? Are we seeing the best of Szcezny now? Should we expect any more improvement and can we be patient enough to wait a couple more years before we see the best of him? Do we expect to see any more blunders like the Carling cup final against Birmingham in 2011? I still remember David Seaman clawing back a sure goal against Sheffield United like it was yesterday. It was the most magnificent save I have ever seen. When do we expect Szcezny to pull off such saves? There are so many unanswered questions right now .
There is no denying Szcezny’s confidence and his talent but when we think about the players that have slipped through our fingers, I keep asking myself if it is really worth it to have him as our number one. There was so much talk of Pepe Reina coming to Arsenal from Liverpool before he belatedly went to Napoli to be reunited with Benitez. This is a goalkeeper who could be relied on and he already has a Champions league to his name.
We all know about Julio Cesar. He won the Serie A goalkeeper of year award in 2009 and 2010, was nominated for Ballon D’or in 2009 and has won five scudetti with Inter Milan. Surely a keeper of that Pedigree would have had teams clamouring for his signature and yet he is currently playing in the MLS with Toronto FC on loan from QPR. At 34 years, surely he still a lot of years left in him at the top level. No one can blame Wenger for playing Szcezny as he does have massive talent but the question remains. Does he really deserve to be Arsenal’s number one?
