With several top clubs in the market for quality defenders, the speculation is mounting regarding the future of West Ham man Winston Reid. The sturdy centre back has already attracted significant interest from clubs like United and Arsenal, and with Liverpool also reportedly monitoring the situation, it looks like his days at the Boleyn Ground are numbered.
The New Zealand international’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he has so far refused to sign an extension. This means that West Ham will either be forced to sell him cheaply in January or let him go for free over the summer. However manager Sam Allardyce has not yet given up hope, and is still trying his best to keep the player. The Hammers are currently in fourth place in the League and this will surely be further incentive for the manager to try and retain his star defender.
According to reports, the player wants higher wages, to the amount of £60,000-a-week; plus bonuses. This is something the bigger clubs can afford but it is beyond the reach of West Ham.
And since Arsenal and United have both declared their intentions of signing a defender, there looks to be only one outcome here.
Should We Buy?
Yes. Simply put, we can’t afford to NOT buy him. There are very few quality defenders up for sale; and first choice target Mats Hummels has an asking price beyond our budget. Plus Reid has extensive Premier League experience, something that is vital if he is to slot directly into the first team. Provided that we get him for around £15 million, we should do our best to sign him.

He may not be the marquee signing that the fans want, but he is the player we need; who checks all the right boxes. Here’s hoping that Wenger beats LvG to the purchase.
