Alex Iwobi will have a new shirt number next season, with the young Nigerian set to leave the No.45 behind. He’s taken the No.17 shirt vacated by Alexis Sanchez, who in turn took Tomas Rosicky’s old number; the No.7.

Iwobi’s 45 shirt actually became pretty iconic during his breakout season, with many associating the talented youngster with that number. It’s a shame to see him abandon it, but it’s also great to see him moving up the ranks. Arsenal released the news on Twitter, showing the transformation in a clever little clip:

The No.17 shirt comes with big boots to fill, as in his first season with Arsenal and in the No.17 Alexis Sanchez was absolutely superb. Obviously nobody is expecting him to replicate the kind of form the Chilean showed during his debut campaign, but after an impressive 2015/16 season more of the same will be expected from Iwobi.

Arsenal have always known for their willingness to put faith in youth, especially under Arsene Wenger. We haven’t necessarily experienced the success we would have liked from nurturing youth in recent years, but recently that has looked to be changing. Hector Bellerin and Aelx Iwobi have both looked fantastic since breaking out, and hopefully they continue to impress next season.
