Italian giants Juventus are reportedly planning a swoop for Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy in January, according to a number of reports in the press (via Football Italia).
The French defender, who joined Arsenal last season from Newcastle United, has had an extremely unlucky twelve months at the Emirates. Soon after joining the Gunners, he was sidelined for three months with an ankle injury; and once he returned to action he soon suffered a dislocated shoulder that kept him away from the field for another three months. The rise of Hector Bellerin in that period further slashed his playing time, and he has done himself no favours with a couple of disappointing performances this season.
The unsettled player has already revealed that he considered leaving the club over the summer (via Daily Star) and now he may get an opportunity to do so, with Juventus in desperate need of reinforcements. The Italian side’s long term right-back, Stefan Lichtsteiner, has recently had to undergo cardiac surgery and is expected to remain on the sidelines for up to six months – and Debuchy offers an easy-to-get short term alternative for them.
The Frenchman will surely be tempted; his lack of playing time recently has seen him dropped from the France national squad and he will be desperate to regain his place. However, I cannot see it ending well for him. Once Lichtsteiner returns, Juventus will obviously prefer to play the much more experienced man, and Debuchy may find himself relegated to the bench once more.
With that being said however, if the Italian Champions offer a good enough price, we should let him leave and bring in someone younger.
