Martin Keown has claimed that Mesut Ozil is not “fit to wear the shirt” after the German’s disappointing performance during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid (via The Mirror).
It was Arsenal’s biggest match of the season but the team didn’t perform against Atletico Madrid on Thursday night.
Pundits and Arsenal fans alike have been hugely critical of the team’s performance after the Gunners managed just one shot on goal.
Perhaps nobody was harsher than Martin Keown, the former Invincible who singled out Mesut Ozil for his performance in Madrid.
“I haven’t been happy with him for some time and it seems as if he picks and chooses his games.
“Show some drive, show some energy. He’s on the edge of it. It’s almost like he’s got his hands in the air and saying ‘these players aren’t as good as me’,” Keown said on BT Sport.
“I bet he doesn’t play again this season. He’ll have some emotional breakdown and won’t be able to play at the weekend, I don’t know how many illnesses he’s had this season.

“That is not a proper performance. He’s not giving everything and there’s much more under the bonnet. Somebody else will find it. Whether the new manager coming can find it I don’t know.
“It’s a big problem for the new manager because Wenger’s invested an awful lot of money in this player and I’m not seeing a performance to go with it.
“He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt tonight.”
Some harsh words from Martin Keown but it’s difficult to disagree with anything he has said. Mesut Ozil is a fantastic player but he hasn’t played well in months and his performance last night was really poor. It will be interesting to see how he gets on with a new manager.
