Gunners defender Laurent Koscielny believes new signing Per Mertesacker will be vital for Arsenal this season after their clean sheet on Saturday.
With first choice defender Thomas Vermaelen still sidelined for a month, the need for a reliable partner for Koscielny is required after the 8-2 drilling from United.
“He is a very good defender with a lot of experience,” said the Frenchman. “He is a German international and is really important for us on the pitch.
“He is tall which is good for our physical side, and he will help me on the pitch with defensive corners.”
Koscielny understands the importance of keeping a clean sheet in Dortmund on Tuesday night, and believes there is enough quality in the squad to see this happen
“We must defend very well and make a clean-sheet more possible,” he said.

“It is very important to defend together. We have the quality and it is in our hands to perform, along with intelligent players who put the effort in on the pitch.
“We have new players who have arrived at the Club, and it is important for us that they can provide some technical creativity in midfield.”
Despite constant criticism in the English and German media over Mertesacker’s speed, he did well in the Swansea game, and his timing of tackles are great, and his height as a fantastic asset that we can utilize on the offence too. Like Koscielny said though, a clean sheet against Dortmund is a must on Tuesday evening, and the return of Alex Song will be welcomed by the defence to add some more cover.
