Arsenal are reportedly close to securing a deal to sign Greece international defender Kostas Manolas, according to reports in Goal.com.
The 23 year old was the backbone of Greece’s defense and was named one of the 50 best players at the World Cup in Brazil. He played every minute of his team’s four matches at the World Cup, allowing just two goals on a run to the round of 16.
The North London club are currently looking to bring in another central defender after Thomas Vermaelen was sold to Barcelona and the Olympiakos defender seems the likely man to replace the Belgian at the Emirates.
The report suggests Manolas is undergoing a medical and the FA Cup champions had opened talks with the Greece club over a move for the defender earlier in August. It is understood we have been quoted a transfer fee of £8 million for the centre-half.
It further states that the youngster is also wanted by Juventus, but the North London side appear to have moved ahead of the Italian club in the race to sign the Greece international. Olympiacos’ strategic advisor, confirmed interest from England and has also admitted that he can leave for a bid of just £8 million. He said:
In the last few days, interesting proposals have arrived from England.
We are not willing to negotiate his sale for less than £8 million. If we receive the right offer, we are willing to sell him.

Style of Play:
His strength, awareness and talent on the ball make him the full package in terms of a centre back. His current playing style relies hugely on physicality and like Laurent Koscielny in his first couple of years, he shows signs of unbelievable ability, but he is prone to the odd error. However, this is something which can be cut out of his game as he is only 23. He is considered a rising talent in European football having represented his club 25 times in the Greek Super League.
Should we Buy?
Despite signing Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers earlier in the summer, a defensive addition looks a necessity for the Gunners. Mertesacker and Koscielny are hugely favoured by the Frenchman so it is important to bring in a young central defender who can slot in and compete with Chambers.
After his strong performances at the World Cup he seems an interesting option, however he would presumably play a bit-part, substitute role. He is very rough around the edges but with a bit of help from the likes of Wenger, Steve Bould and Per Mertesacker, he could be shaped into a useful defender.
Chambers performed well in his league debut for the club against Crystal Palace, the ease in which he could step into centre back, right back or even defensive midfield means that signing another centre-back is logical. Looking at the price tag and the potential class of Manolas, the deal makes sense, and for Arsenal’s sake, let’s hope Wenger dips into his pocket once again very soon.
