Reports in Spain suggest that Mesut Özil would probably have signed for FC Barcelona last week but for the intervention of Lionel Messi (via Don Balon).
With all the talk of Alexis Sanchez leaving the club, not many people have talked about Mesut Özil’s potential exit from the Emirates.
The Gunners’ second most-expensive signing of all time only has a year left on his contract and after his most recent post on social media, it looks like the German doesn’t know where he will end up.
So far, Özil has refused to sign a new contract at Arsenal and hasn’t exactly performed to the level many expected of him at the Emirates, on a consistent basis at least.
He was reportedly a late target for FC Barcelona but Spanish publication Don Balon has shed some light onto why that deal never materialised.
The Spanish paper reports that Lionel Messi actively advised against the German’s signing, claiming that he would add little to the Barcelona team and would represent bad business.

Arsenal are in a sorry state right now but FC Barcelona aren’t faring much better. Few Arsenal fans would have objected if Barcelona offered big money for Mesut Özil this summer but perhaps we’ve seen why that didn’t happen.
