Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Yaya Toure, insisting that the Manchester City man is the best foreign midfielder since former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Toure is unquestionably one of the most complete midfielders in football today, and when on form he is almost unplayable. And there are certainly similarities between he and Arsenal icon Vieira, with both players absolute physical specimens, loving to get forward from deep, and leading their sides by example.
Carragher believes Toure is the driving force behind City, and insists he will be vital to any success they are hoping to have this campaign.
“Alongside Patrick Vieira, Yaya Toure is the best foreign central midfielder I’ve seen in the Premier League,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.
“He was the driving force behind Manchester City’s two title triumphs, the man who scored the winning goal in an FA Cup final and a truly monumental player for them.
“And at West Brom on Monday night he looked close to his marauding best again, driving from midfield and scoring with fantastic precision from just outside the box.”
The main difference between Toure and Vieira you’d have to say was probably their mentality, with the Ivorian known for being something of a diva (via The Telegraph). Vieira certainly had his own issues, and was regularly seen losing his temper and being ejected from the pitch. He always gave 100% on the field though, and was club captain for a reason.
Arsenal transfer news
Carragher’s not wrong though, as Toure is a truly world class midfielder on his day. If he remains fully fit and actually feels like turning up this season, then City will definitely be contenders for the title.
