Welbeck may not be a world class striker, but Louis van Gaal must be regretting letting him go given the situation at Manchester United recently. They’ve struggled badly for goals, with their options up front leaving a lot to be desired. Young Marcus Rashford has come to their rescue, but that seems to have been more down to luck than careful planning from van Gaal.
Arsene Wenger signed Welbeck on deadline day in 2014, but apparently wouldn’t have done so if it weren’t for a phone call from Ferguson. The former Manchester United manager called Wenger to talk up the 25-year-old, highlighting his energy, work-rate, and team ethic, as well as pointing out that he was a fast learner who never needed to be told twice in training.
Welbeck has been an excellent squad player since his arrival, filling in all across the front line and even beating out Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott for a starting spot up front recently.
While there were many Man United fans who were pleased to see the back of him – thinking they’d hit the jackpot by replacing him with Radamel Falcao – some fans and a number of United legends have been extremely critical of van Gaal’s decision to let him go though, and it seems like they were right to be.

We unquestionably need to be signing a striker of a higher calibre this summer, but Welbeck has still proved to be an excellent signing. Arsenal fans will be thanking Ferguson for his assistance, but Manchester United fans might not be so thrilled that he helped a direct rival.
