Rio Ferdinand was full of praise for Mesut Özil following our dominant 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb this past Tuesday night, and speaking on BT Sport he labeled the German playmaker an artist, as reported by the Mirror.
The Manchester United legend was alongside Ian Wright and Steven Gerrard, and all three were highly complimentary about our record signing.
“He is someone that you love watching playing all the time,” Ferdinand said.
“When you are watching a player like him, he is an artist with his left-foot.
“He is always looking for a pass to open the door and pass the ball though and when it is going well, it is beautiful to watch.”
Özil has been in absolutely breathtaking form so far this season, and has been providing his usual multitude of assists as well as getting himself on the scoresheet. He could have had a hat-trick against the Croatian side if things went his way, and was particularly unlucky not to score with a couple of excellent efforts.

He’s well on his way to smashing the Premier League assists record this season, and he’s been instrumental in our campaign so far.
The former Real Madrid star has been used as a scapegoat in the past, and whenever we’ve been playing poorly pundits have blamed ‘lazy’ and ‘lethargic’ Özil. He’s far from lazy though, and uneducated pundits simply repeat what they’ve heard before without really analysing his game.
Arsenal transfer news
He’s finally starting to get some recognition though, and pundits like Ferdinand, Wright, and the rest of the Sky Sports and BT Sport panels are far less unfairly critical of the German international. We wouldn’t be where we were this season without Özil, and he’s more than justified the massive price tag he came with.
