Manchester United are set to up their offer for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen if this report is to be believed, after failing with a previous £6million bid.
The Belgian has become a bit-part player at Emirates despite wearing their armband for the last two seasons, falling down the pecking order in favour of the solid Per Mertesacker and Laurent Kosicelny partnership.
Vermaelen lifted the FA Cup in May’s victory over Hull City but his future has been cast in serious doubt due to his lack of regular involvement with the north London outfit.
The 28-year-old admitted a new destination may be on the cards, but crunch talks with Arsene Wenger are on the cards first when he reports for pre-season preparations.
He told reporters during the World Cup:
I really do not know where I will play, Arsenal or elsewhere next season.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
All my attention went to the World Cup. I will see when I talk with Arsenal.
It is thought United will be returning with an improved offer in the region of £10m in an attempt to strengthen Louis van Gaal’s backline, however Wenger will be reluctant to sell unless they find a suitable replacement.
Arsenal will be left with just Mertesacker and Koscielny as the only two recognized centre backs should they choose to sell, so they would need to secure at least two new defenders, one potentially a young, up and comer.
Certainly it will be a disappointment to lose another captain to Old Trafford, but realistically he is in his last year of his contract and the Belgian has hardly fulfilled his potential. Vermaelen will once again be third choice, which he will hardly be happy with, and is one of the clubs top earners. We are better reinvesting some cash into two new defenders for the future if he wants to depart.
