Reports in Germany indicate that Manchester United are the favourites to sign Arsenal’s Mesut Özil after contract talks have ceased (via Sport Witness).
Well, it’s hardly the best news to get. The transfer window may be closed but that doesn’t appear to stop Arsenal players being linked with moves away from the club.
Mesut Özil is the next one being linked with a transfer away from the Emirates with a number of high profile clubs including Manchester United reportedly interested.
The German’s contract at the Emirates is due to expire at the end of the season and there is little indication that he will sign a new deal.
In fact, SportBild in Germany claims that Arsenal have not held contract renewal talks with Özil since February of this year.
Alexis Sanchez is in the same boat as the German. Both players’ contracts expire next summer and it seems that the Gunners are resigned to losing both of them on free transfers.

It remains to be seen how much truth is in these reports from Germany. There’s no doubt that either Arsenal or Mesut Özil himself have been stalling on contract negotiations but it was just assumed that he would sign a new deal eventually. Arsenal fans are divided on the German’s performances but it’s a ridiculous situation to lose the club’s second most expensive signing ever on a free transfer.
