Arsenal managed just one shot on target as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Vitoria in Portugal
Team News – Match Reports – Player Ratings
Match: Vitoria v Arsenal
Venue: Estádio do Bonfim, Setubal
Kick-Off (UK Time): 15:50 06/11/2019
It was a slow start to the match for Arsenal. The Gunners didn’t really threaten their opponents in the opening stages of the match and it was Vitoria who had the better chances. The Portuguese side’s midfielder Pepe came close inside 10 minutes when his powerful shot smacked against the post.
The home side came close to scoring just moments later. This time, the long shot was on target and it forced a fine save from Emi Martinez.
Rob Holding headed over from a corner after 25 minutes in what was the only chance Arsenal created all half despite having 65% of possession.
The second half began in the same fashion. There was very little from Arsenal in terms of creativity or attacking ability moving forward.
The Gunners continued with their dire attacking football and seemed totally unable of creating a chance from open play. Vitoria’s threat at the other end died so it became a poor battle in the midfield.
It seemed likely that a single goal would decide this match and as the clock ticked past 75 minutes, that seemed even likelier. Arsenal finally got the breakthrough with 10 minutes left on the match. Nicolas Pepe whipped a cross in from 40 yards out and Shkodran Mustafi was left unmarked at the back post to head home.
That looked to be that but it was Vitoria who made an unlikely comeback. A simple cross came into the box which wasn’t cleared. The ball came back across and Bruno Duarte steered the ball into the back of the net with a wonderful acrobatic finish.
1-1 with a few minutes left and Vitoria were threatening. The Portuguese side very nearly added a second when Shkodran Mustafi inadvertently steered a cross onto the outside of his own post but it wasn’t to be as this poor match finished in a draw.
