Mathieu Flamini has revealed that he has turned down a two year deal at AC Milan in order to push through a move to Arsenal.
The 29-year-old signed on for a second spell with the Gunners in August after leaving Arsene Wenger’s side on a free transfer in 2008 to join the Rossoneri.
Flamini says that he turned down a two-year deal from AC Milan so that he could work with Arsene Wenger once again.
Speaking to France football, he said:
Milan asked me to extend my contract for two years.
However, at 29 years old, I didn’t want to sign anything less than three seasons. I had other opportunities in Italy where clubs other than Milan contacted me, as well as from sides in Germany and England.
At this stage of my career it was an important choice, so I took time to think. To maintain my fitness I decided to train with Arsenal and then over time the deal unfolded.

The fact that Arsene Wenger is still at the club was an important part of my decision, he knows me very well and has played a big role in my career.
He introduced me to the best league, the Premier League, and has taught me on many levels, tactical, technical and mental.
Flamini initially left Arsenal in 2008 when he refused to sign a new contract and joined AC Milan. The 29-year-old, who made 153 appearances for the Gunners from 2004 to 2008, returns to the Emirates after five seasons in Serie A.
Many fans and pundits questioned Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger for bringing back 29-year-old Flamini on a free transfer. However his performance against spurs proved just why he was brought back. He showed grit, determination and played a crucial part in the gunners hard fought win in the North London derby.
Flamini is purely a no-nonsense midfielder. His job is to win the ball and give it to others to create. That is what Arsenal need this season as they aim to not just make the top four, but win the title. He may not be the most skillful or talented player in the world but he does all of the dirty work that keeps the Gunners ticking over. He presses, tackles, organizes, harasses the opposition and leads by example.
With Ramsey in great form Flamini is unlikely to be a regular right away. However the Frenchman will undoubtedly prove to be a vital squad member throughout the season. He may well find himself called upon for specific tactical roles, closing out the midfield in crucial away games or tight European ties.
