Per Mertesacker believes we still haven’t seen anything like the best of Mesut Özil, and claims he is finally starting to show what he is capable of in an Arsenal shirt, as reported by the Independent.
The giant German has played with Özil at a number of levels and has been able to watch him grow as a player.
The playmaker has struggled to find his best form following his move from Real Madrid but looks to be revitalized following a return from injury.
“We played together at Werder Bremen as well as for the national team,” he said.
“He was always that promising talent and now he is showing it a lot more. He has had so much experience in his young career.”
Having been sidelined for months following a knee injury against Chelsea Özil made his first start of the year against Brighton in the FA Cup.

He showed few signs of rust and put on an excellent performance which was capped with a goal.
The German international continued that good form against Aston Villa this past weekend; scoring, assisting, and picking up the Man of the Match award in our dominant 5-0 win over Paul Lambert’s side.
Mertesacker believes his compatriot needs to show more of a selfish streak however, and claims that sometimes he needs to shoot, rather than looking to always pick out a teammate.
“Sometimes I wish he is more selfish in front of goal, you can see when he breaks through the lines, he should have scored instead of looking for another player. He is dangerous, has pace and is always a threat,” he continued.
With two goals in two games (as well as an incorrectly disallowed goal against Villa) Ozil looks to be taking Mertesacker’s thought into action.
He is undeniably one of the most talented players in the squad and as such will hopefully deliver the goods on a regular basis.
