Mesut Özil has hit back at the media following our 2-0 win over AS Monaco, criticising them for focusing on his shirt swap with Geoffrey Kondogbia, as reported by Goal.
Our record signing was rather surprisingly blasted for his performance in the game that saw us eliminated from the Champions League, despite putting in a decent shift.
He rather naively swapped shirts with Monaco’s Kondogbia at half time, and was lambasted for the decision following the game.
The German World Cup winner was furious that his shirt swap was the main thing the media were focusing on, and blasted them for not finding ” more important” news to report on.
“Geoffrey Kondogbia asked me for my shirt and I wanted to do him a favour,”
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
“Maybe I should have given him the shirt in the tunnel. But seriously guys, is there nothing more important to discuss for a knockout game than a shirt swap?”
He’s right to an extent, as shirt swapping is not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. It was however, rather silly to trade shirts with Kondogbia in a game that meant so much to the fans.
The £42.5m man surely knew the kind of reaction he would get int he media, as this isn’t the first time an incident like this has taken place.
He should have known better, but it really isn’t a big deal, and we should move on and focus on the FA Cup and the Premier League.
