Villareal have confirmed Arsenal will be the new home of their star centre-back Gabriel Paulista with forward Joel Campbell heading the other way on loan for the remainder of the season.
The La Liga outfit confirmed the two deals on their official website this evening, with the imminent Gunners new boy being left out of the clubs home clash with Levante.
The statement read:
Ahead of the finalisation of some small contractual details on Monday, Villarreal and Arsenal have agreed the transfer of the Brazilian defender Gabriel Armando de Abreu. Once the centre-half passes a medical he will join the London Premier League club.
Arsene Wenger is thought to be paying the Brazilian’s 20 million-euro buyout clause despite the fact he has yet to receive a working visa for the UK. But surely the Gunners boss will have iron out the creases with the FA where he could be granted an ‘exceptional talent’ visa despite not receiving a senior cap for the Brazil national team.
Villareal also confirmed Campbell will spend the rest of the season in Spain after struggling to build on just four appearances for the club this season. The 22-year-old is thought to have signed a contract extension with the Gunners before departing however which suggests Wenger may still have plans to utilize the Costa Rica international in the future.
The club added:
Villarreal and Arsenal have reached agreement for the loan for the Costa Rican player Joel Campbell, who after passing the usual medical will play with the ‘Submarine’ until the end of the season
We are still waiting on the official confirmation from Arsenal but hopefully the medical will be fine and the deal announced before the Gunners FA Cup clash with Brighton tomorrow.
