AS Monaco Warn Arsenal: We Beat You Last Time
Why Qatar 2022 World Cup Criticism Clearly Not Motivated By Racism
Arsene Wenger publicly stated his appreciation for Porto striker Jackson Martinez earlier this season, and the Colombian has certainly been linked many times in the past.
Giroud is determined not to lose his starting spot at Arsenal to any newcomers, and claims that is the reason for his recent good form.
“I don’t have an inferiority complex. I don’t have their name, but – in terms of stats – I am just behind [Diego] Costa and [Sergio] Aguero,” he said.
“When people are talking about a player to come and take your place, you take it personally because it’s your position. I hear people say, ‘They have Giroud and [Danny] Welbeck but they need a world-class striker.’ Meaning, us, we’re not world-class forwards.

“It spurs you on. Recently, there was a buzz around Jackson Martinez. The coach has said good things about him, the player has said he would like to come. I learned that before the Middlesbrough game [a 2-0 win]. It gave me added motivation. I was very happy to score those two goals.”
Competition for places can be an important factor in motivating certain players, and it seems Giroud has greatly benefited from the news of a potential summer signing at the Emirates.
It’s often disappointing when we are linked with top class players and the move doesn’t materialise, but if this is the effect it has on our big target man then bring on the rumours.
